Overview

Bring old photographs back without changing the people in them

Scan or photograph an old print and the AI photo restoration tool repairs what time has done to it — scratches, tears, creases, stains, fading and noise — and sharpens soft detail. Turn on colour to give a black-and-white photo natural, period-appropriate colours, or leave it off to keep it in black and white.

Faces and identities stay the same

Restoration should not turn your relatives into strangers. The tool is told to keep every person's face, age, expression, hair and clothing exactly as they are, without beautifying or slimming anyone, and to keep the original composition and photographic character.

Colour is a choice

Colour is on by default and adds natural colours that fit the era of the photo. Switch it off when you want a cleaner black-and-white print. Colours are the AI's best interpretation — they are plausible, not a record of what people actually wore.

Getting a good scan

Start from the best copy you have. Scan prints flat at a high resolution, or photograph them in even daylight without glare or reflections; a sharper starting point gives the restoration more to work with.

Use cases

Photos worth restoring

  • Family portraits

Repair grandparents' wedding photos, school pictures and portraits that have cracked, faded or yellowed.

  • Places and history

Clean up old pictures of a hometown, a house or an event for a family album, a local history page or a talk.

  • Colour for black and white

See an old black-and-white photo in natural colour, with skin, clothes and backgrounds coloured to suit the period.

How it works

How to restore an old photo

  1. Scan or photograph the print

Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP of the photo, as flat and evenly lit as you can.

  2. Choose colour and add what you know

Keep “Add colour” on to colorize, or turn it off to keep the photo monochrome. If you know details that are hard to see, such as the colour of a dress or a car, write them in the box.

  3. Generate

Check the credits shown under the button, then generate the restored photo.

  4. Compare and save

Switch between the restored version and the original, download it, and find it in History later.

How credits work for photo restoration

A restoration is one high-quality AI generation, charged by what the generation actually uses for your photo.

You see the estimate — and the most that can be reserved — under the Generate button before anything happens. The reservation is made when you click and settled to what it actually used once the restored photo is ready; the unused part goes back to your balance.

If a restoration fails, the result area shows the reason and whether it cost anything. When the failure is on our side or our content check blocks the photo, no credits are taken.

Restoration is one of the AI tools included with every credit pack; they stay available for as long as your paid credits are valid.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Didn't find your answer? Email us at support@alreadyran.com.

Will it change my relatives' faces?

It is instructed to keep every face, age, expression, hairstyle and outfit exactly as they are and not to beautify anyone. Compare the result with the original, especially on small or badly damaged faces.

Can I keep the photo black and white?

Yes. Switch off “Add colour” and the photo is repaired and sharpened but stays black and white.

Are the colours accurate?

They are natural, period-appropriate colours chosen by the AI. They look plausible, but they cannot know the real colour of a dress or a car from a black-and-white picture.

What damage can it repair?

Scratches, small tears, creases, stains, fading, noise and softness. Missing pieces of a face or a large torn-off corner are much harder, because the AI has to invent what is missing.

How much does a restoration cost?

Credits follow what the restoration actually uses for your image and resolution. The estimate appears under Generate before you click, and this page shows examples at today's prices.

Can I choose the resolution?

Yes: your photo's own size is selected first, or choose 1K, 2K or 4K. The result keeps the proportions of your photo, and the credits under Generate change with the resolution you pick.
